Delaware Breakwater letterbook.

The letterbook contains correspondence of Maj. George Bender, Quartermaster at Phila. and Lt. Carlos Adolphus Waite, both of the Quartermaster Dept. concerning the construction of the Delaware Breakwater. Letters are addressed to both Army and civilian personnel connected with the project.

The Delaware Breakwater and Harbor of Refuge was constructed behind Cape Henlopen, Del., in 1828-1835 to provide a safe anchorage for ships entering and leaving the Delaware River. The original breakwater was designed by William Strickland and constructed with federal funds under the supervision of the Army's Board of Engineers for Fortifications.
