United States. Board of Engineers for Fortifications

The Delaware Breakwater and Harbor of Refuge was constructed behind Cape Henlopen, Del., in 1828-1835 to provide a safe anchorage for ships entering and leaving the Delaware River. The original breakwater was designed by William Strickland and constructed with federal funds under the supervision of the Army's Board of Engineers for Fortifications. The breakwater was constructed of granite rubble supplied by quarries along the Delaware and Hudson Rivers. The breakwater consisted of two separate sections which were joined together in 1897.
