Reminiscence, ca.1900, in which Inzer described the notable events that occurred at the Ala. secession convention, held 1861 Jan. 7-11, at Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Ala., including the large number of militia present, the arrival of all 100 delegates by the first roll call, the election of W.M. Brooks, the immediate secessionist, as president of the convention, over Robert Jemison, the cooperationist; the three groups of delegates, one group favoring immediate secession, another group favoring cooperation with all the southern states, and another group opposing secession altogether; the age of the delegates; his favorable impression of both William Lowndes Yancey and Robert Jemison, and very brief characterizations of several other delegates; the dinner at the home of Thomas Hill Watts, the scene about the capitol on Jan. 11, the scene in the convention hall on that same date, including the earnest debate on the right of secession that proceeded without rancor; the final vote on the ordinance of secession; the presentation of the newly created flag, a description of it, and the eloquent speech of Alpheus Baker upon accepting it; and the remarks of Inzer at the convention, delivered on behalf of cooperation on 1861 Jan. 11.

Robert Jemison, Jr., was a planter, lawyer, businessman, state representative and senator, member of the Alabama Secession Convention, and Confederate States Senator. He was born September 17, 1802, in Lincoln County, Georgia, near Augusta, and died October 17, 1871 at Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was the son of William and Sarah (Mims) Jemison. Inzer was born 1834 Jan. 9, near Lawrenceville, Gwinnett Co., Ga., to Henry and Phoebe Reid Inzer. He attended the common school of the vicinity, and then Gwinnett Institute in 1852.
