Henry Standage was a private in the 5th Company of the U.S. Mormon Battalion that was formed in 1846 to assist the U.S. Army in the Mexican War. 500 Mormons were enlisted for this purpose, encouraged to join by the president of their church, Brigham Young. This group made the longest infantry march in history, consisting of 2,000 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa to San Diego, California (March 20, 1846 - January 29, 1847).
