Henry Standage was a private in the 5th Company of the U.S. Mormon Battalion that was formed in 1846 to assist the U.S. Army in the Mexican War. 500 Mormons were enlisted for this purpose, encouraged to join by the president of their church, Brigham Young. This group made the longest infantry march in history, consisting of 2,000 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa to San Diego, California (March 20, 1846 - January 29, 1847). Along with 500 men, there were 16 families, including about 50 children and dependents. No Mormon was killed in battle, but two died enroute.

Born in England, Standage emigrated to America in 1835, came to Utah in 1847, and died in Mesa, Arizona in 1899. Standage was one of 549 soldiers who in 1846 enlisted in the U.S. army from the Mormon emigration camps at Council Bluffs in the Iowa Territory. The battalion marched from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to California by way of Santa Fe and the Gila River. Released from service in California, Standage and many other volunteers joined Brigham Young's Mormon company and arrived in Utah in October, 1847.
