Joan Steele Collection of Material about Mayne Reid, 1853-1882

Joan Steele wrote her dissertation on Mayne Reid for the UCLA Department of English and later published a book titled, (1978). Mayne Reid (1818-1883) sailed from Ireland to the U.S. in 1839 and began to publish poetry and stories after settling in Philadelphia in 1843. He also wrote dime novels for the publisher Beadle and Adams. His publications include (1849), (1850), (1851), (1852), (1853), (1854), (1864), and (1865). The collection consists of research materials used by Joan Steele while writing her dissertation on Mayne Reid.
