Steele, Joan
Joan Steele wrote her dissertation on Mayne Reid for the UCLA Dept. of English and later published a book titled, Captain Mayne Reid (1978); Reid was born Apr. 4, 1818 in Ballyroney, County Down, Northern Ireland; he sailed to the US in 1839 and began to publish poetry and stories after settling in Philadelphia in 1843; joined the First NY Volunteer Regiment in 1846 and left the US Army as a captain in 1848; he returned to Europe in 1849; later returned to America and wrote dime novels for the publisher Beadle and Adams; went back to England in 1870 and died in October 1883; his publications include War life (1849), The rifle rangers (1850), The scalp hunters (1851), The desert home (1852), The boy hunters (1853), The young voyageurs (1854), Lost Lenore (1864), and The headless horseman : a strange tale of Texas (1865).
