Joseph Edward Shaw Papers, ca. 1887-1963, bulk 1933-1941

Joseph E. Shaw (1889-1965) was born in Lamar, Colorado. Shaw was the brother and secretary of Los Angeles Mayor Frank L. Shaw (elected 1933, relected 1937). In 1938, a civic reform movement successfully sponsored the recall of Mayor Shaw. He was replaced by Superior Court Judge Fletcher Bowron. Joseph Shaw was convicted in 1940 of selling civil service jobs during his brother's administration, although his conviction was reversed by the California Supreme Court the following year. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, business papers, tape recordings, photographs, phonograph records, clippings, and printed material related to Los Angeles politics when Joseph E. Shaw served as secretary to his brother and afterward.
