Harry Lloyd Hopkins (1890-1946) was born in Sioux City, Iowa. After graduation from Grinnell College in 1912, he became a social worker in New York City with the Christadora Settlement House and the Association for Improving the Conditions of the Poor (AICP). Benson was appointed state commissioner of securities by Governor Floyd B. Olson in 1933 and commissioner of banks later the same year. In 1935 he was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill an unexpired term and served until 1936. He was elected governor of Minnesota in 1936 but was defeated for reelection in 1938. Victor Laurence August Christgau was born on September 20, 1894, in Dexter Township (Mower County), Minnesota, to Frederick and Adeline Vanselow Christgau. He graduated from the University of Minnesota's School of Agriculture in 1917, and then served eleven months (1917-1918) with the U.S. Army's 33rd Engineer Corps in France during World War I.
