Laura Burleson Negley was born into a politically prominent family in 1890 in Austin, Texas. She became active in Democratic Party politics and in suffrage work in the early 1910s. She married Richard Van Wyck Negley, Sr. in 1912 and moved to San Antonio, Texas. Richard Negley founded and operated Negley Paint Company and later became director of Alamo National Bank in San Antonio.
