Born to Samuel Bernard Palmer and Caroline Albert in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, Alexander Mitchell Palmer (1872-1936) attended the Moravian Parochial School in Bethlehem before graduating from Swarthmore College in 1891. The following year, he became a stenographer in the 43rd Judicial District and was admitted to the bar in 1893.
