Born to Samuel Bernard Palmer and Caroline Albert in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, Alexander Mitchell Palmer (1872-1936) attended the Moravian Parochial School in Bethlehem before graduating from Swarthmore College in 1891. The following year, he became a stenographer in the 43rd Judicial District and was admitted to the bar in 1893. After establishing a law practice in Stroudsburg, Palmer worked as the director of several banks and companies. In 1909, he was elected as a Democrat to Congress and later served as a delegate to the 1912 and 1916 Democratic National Convention as well as a member of the Democratic National Committee from 1912 to 1921. In 1919, Palmer was appointed Attorney General. Following his retirement in 1921, he practiced law until his death in 1936.
