Born in Illinois, Orceneth Asbury Fisher (1831-1885) was the son of Methodist circuit rider Orceneth and Elizabeth Watts Fisher. The Methodist church sent the elder Fisher to Texas in 1839. Two years later, he led a group of five wagons, including his family, to the Republic. He preached and led ministries throughout East Texas, including service as chaplain of the Congress of the Republic of Texas, before being transferred to California and then Oregon. From a small beginning in May 1932, the Methodist Crusaders Choir, then with 75 choristers, was hurriedly formed and made its first public appearance at the General Conference Meetings of the Methodist Church of Australasia. It is primarily a hymn-singing choir, and the devoted members feel that the main purpose in their coming together is to spread the gospel message of the Church by means of song.
