Fisher, Orceneth, 1803-1880
Variant namesBorn in Illinois, Orceneth Asbury Fisher (1831-1885) was the son of Methodist circuit rider Orceneth and Elizabeth Watts Fisher. The Methodist church sent the elder Fisher to Texas in 1839. Two years later, he led a group of five wagons, including his family, to the Republic. He preached and led ministries throughout East Texas, including service as chaplain of the Congress of the Republic of Texas, before being transferred to California and then Oregon. Orceneth Asbury Fisher followed in his father’s footsteps, also becoming a Methodist minister. He married Mary Simons (1843-1912), daughter of early Texas settlers Captain Thomas and Susan Thomas Simons. The couple had several children, including sons Asbury and Sterling. Orceneth A. Fisher led congregations in Texas, Oregon, and California.
