Born in Virginia in 1790, James Davis moved to Texas in 1834 after serving as a major general in the Alabama Militia and as the United States consul at Santa Fe. He joined General Sam Houston's staff in 1836 and was asked by Houston in 1842 to help prevent attacks against the Alabama and Coushatta Indians in April of that year. Andrew Jackson Donelson was nephew, ward, and personal secretary to President Andrew Jackson throughout his administration. President John Tyler (1841-1845) appointed him chargé d'affaires of the United States to the Republic of Texas and he was U.S. Minister to Prussia from 1846 to 1849.
