The son of Daniel and Desire Lee Lathrop, Henry Lee Lathrop was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on 1849 November 21. By 1860, he and his family had moved to Silver Creek in Chautauqua County, New York. Lathrop first appears in Texas in the 1880 census, residing in the Wise County town of Aurora. By 1900, he was living and working as a hardware dealer in Fort Worth.
