Martin A. Ryerson was born in 1856 to Martin Ryerson and Mary A. (Campau) Ryerson. Ryerson graduated from Harvard Law School in 1878. After several years practicing law, he joined his father in the family lumber business. Martin Ryerson was born in Bergen County, New Jersey in 1818. In 1851, he moved to Chicago and opened a lumber yard. He was involved in Chicago business and real estate. Ryerson was described in the Chicago Evening Journal as "one of the most prominent lumbermen and capitalists of the city, as well as being one of the oldest settlers."
