Martin A. Ryerson was born in 1856 to Martin Ryerson and Mary A. (Campau)

Ryerson.

Ryerson graduated from Harvard Law School in 1878. After several years practicing law, he joined his father in the family lumber business. Upon his father's death in 1887, he assumed control the business Martin Ryerson & Company, until his retirement in the 1890s.

Ryerson was actively involved in many cultural and educational institutions. He served as a trustee at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1890 until 1932. He also endowed the Ryerson Library at the Art Institute. Ryerson was an incorporator of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, and served as a trustee at the Museum. Ryerson was involved in the founding of the University of Chicago, where he was a member of the first board of trustees. He served on the board until 1922. In 1893, he gave the Ryerson Physical Laboratory to the University in honor of his father.

Ryerson married Caroline Huchinson Ryerson in 1881.

Martin A. Ryerson died in 1932.
