Peale's Museum was established by Charles Willson Peale in 1784. It was public rather than private in character and was governed initially by a Society of Visitors. Thomas Birch was a marine, landscape, portrait, and miniature painter. The son of artist William Russell Birch, he was born in England in 1799 and emigrated to Philadelphia with his father in 1794.
