Thomas Merritt Pittman Papers, . 1894-1932

Thomas Merritt Pittman (1857-1932) of North Carolina was a lawyer, judge, and member of the North Carolina Historical Commission, 1911-1932. The collection includes letters received by Pittman concerning personal matters, the Baptist church, law, particularly a bar association committee studying the Torrens system of registering land titles, 1911-1917, and historical interests, particularly the origin of the Confederate flag. Also included are papers of Jessica Randolph Smith, who claimed that her father, Orren R. Smith, designed the Confederate flag.
