Andrew Henry Patterson Papers, 1902-1925; 1964

Andrew Henry Patterson (1870-1928) was a professor of physicsat the University of North Carolina and a cooperative observer for the WeatherBureau, United States Department of Agriculture. The collection includescorrespondence of Andrew Henry Patterson and members of his family, and weatherrecords made by Patterson. Included are family and personal letters of Patterson;his parents, Mary Fries and Rufus L. Patterson; and his grandparents, PhoebeCaroline Jones and Samuel F. Patterson. Among the earlier letters are someapparently written in North Carolina during the Civil War by Samuel F. Patterson andothers about impressment of crops and livestock, rumors of Union Army movements, andthe advisability of travel. The majority of the later letters are from Andrew H.Patterson in Chapel Hill, N.C., to his mother, giving news of his family, theUniversity of North Carolina, and life in Chapel Hill. There are seven volumes,1908-1920, of daily records of temperature, rain, and wind at Chapel Hill. Therecords were kept by Patterson as a cooperative observer for the United StatesWeather Bureau.
