Chetlain was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His parents were Swiss, and they came to the United States by the way of Canada. As an infant, he was taken to Galena, Illinois. Frank Albert Root was born 3 July 1837 in Binghampton, New York. He left northeastern Pennsylvania in 1857, joining thousands of other pioneers moving to Kansas territory.
