Charles Kellogg Ober was born May 5, 1856 in Beverly, Mass., and attended Williams College (1879-1883). He developed an early interest in the Young Men's Christian Association which led to his appointment as assistant to Robert R. McBurney, Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. of the City of New York, in 1882. Robert Weidensall was born in 1836 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania and helped organized the YMCA there in 1866. While working as superintendant in the Union Pacific Railroad's car shops in Nebraska, he became active in the Omaha YMCA and was elected its vice president in 1868. Later that year he was made a YMCA employee as its fires field secretary to organize YMCAs along the Union Pacific line. Cephas Brainerd was a lawyer and prominent leader in the YMCA, serving as director and vice-president of the New York City association during the 1850s, and as secretary general of the YMCA's International Committee from 1865 to 1892.
