Yaroslav Chyz (1894-1958) was an outstanding authority on American nationality groups and on the history of immigration, especially of Ukrainians. Wasyl Halich (b. 1896) was born in Strilbychi, on the northern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. In 1912, he came to the United States, settling in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Bloomfield College (Bloomfield, New Jersey) which had a course in Ukrainian, and then Dubuque College (Dubuque, Iowa), where he finished high school and received a B.A. degree.
