John H. Ohly was born in 1911 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1933 he received an A.B. from Williams College, and in 1936 he received an LL.B. from Harvard Law School. From 1936 to 1937, he served as a Harvard University School of Law Moot Court Assistant, and from 1937 to 1940, he practiced law with Breed, Abbott and Morgan in New York City.
