Arthur Aufderheide was born on September 9, 1922, and brought up in New Ulm, Minnesota. He was educated at St Olaf College, the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis and then, as a pathology resident, the University of Minnesota. Ralph Summers Plaisted (b. Sept. 30, 1927, Brunno, Minn.–d. Sept. 8, 2008, Wyoming, Minn.) was an insurance salesman turned Arctic explorer. He, with Walt Pederson, Gerry Pitzl and Jean-Luc Bombardier, were the first explorers to succeed in a surface traverse across the ice to the North Pole on April 19, 1968, making the first confirmed surface conquest of the Pole.
