General Matthew Bunker Ridgway (March 3, 1895 – July 26, 1993) was a senior officer in the United States Army, who served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (1952–1953) and the 19th Chief of Staff of the United States Army (1953–1955). He fought with distinction during World War II, where he was the Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division, leading it in action in Sicily, Italy and Normandy, before taking command of the newly formed XVIII Airborne Corps in August 1944. George Windle Read (b. Nov. 19, 1860, Indianola, Ia.-d. Nov. 6, 1934) graduated from the U.S. military academy at West Point in 1883 where he received his commission as 2nd lieutenant in the 16th Infantry. He advanced to the rank of major general on Mar. 8, 1921 after having commanded the 2nd Army Corps from June 13, 1918, until demobilization on February 1, 1919.
