H.E. Hawkes papers 1945-1946

The H.E. Hawkes papers contain drafts of a proposal by Hawkes including the Newhouse-Hawkes proposal for research in geochemical prospecting. These recommendations led to the development of a wide variety of new exploration methods and the subsequent discovery of new ore deposits. Other reports include the Huff and Cannon reports. Numerous maps are also included.

Herbert Edwin Hawkes was born in New York City on December 11, 1912. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1939 and earned his Ph. D. in geology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1940. He was involved in the establishment of the United States Geological Survey's Geochemical Prospecting Unit in 1946. He was a senior geologist for the USGS from 1940-1953, and he ended his professional career as an independent consulting geologist in Tucson, AZ. From the description of H.E....
