Herbert Edwin Hawkes was born in New York City on December 11, 1912. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1939 and earned his Ph. D. in geology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1940. He was involved in the establishment of the United States Geological Survey's Geochemical Prospecting Unit in 1946. He was a senior geologist for the USGS from 1940-1953, and he ended his professional career as an independent consulting geologist in Tucson, AZ.
