The Hal Dean Drawings and Plans collection includes drawings and plans primarily for “public use" buildings, which were a specialty of the firms Dean, Hunt, and Associates; and Dean, Kruger and Associates. These structures include libraries, university and secondary schools, health care facilities, office buildings and community centers in addition to many commercial structures.

The University of New Mexico was established by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico in 1889. It was to be located in Albuquerque. Elias Stover was appointed the first president. Hal Dean was born in Raton New Mexico in 1935. Dean attended schools in New Mexico and Texas until entering military service in the mid-50s. After a tour in the Marine Corps he attended the University of New Mexico on the G.I. Bill. Upon graduating from UNM's Architecture Program with a BA in 1964, Dean interned in Sydney, Australia and in Albuquerque, New Mexico to fulfill the apprenticeship requirements of the architecture profession.
