After a tour in the Marine Corps he attended the University of New Mexico on the G.I. Bill. Upon graduating from UNM's Architecture Program with a BA in 1964, Dean interned in Sydney, Australia and in Albuquerque, New Mexico to fulfill the apprenticeship requirements of the architecture profession. After passing the exam for architectural certification, Dean was registered to practice in New Mexico in 1968 and opened his own firm in 1971. Dean remained active in the learning, practicing and teaching of architecture by maintaining an internship program within his practice as well as participating in the University of New Mexico's School of Architecture's graduate review programs. Always inclined toward art even in high school, Hal Dean studied architecture believing this profession would retain many of the same sensibilities and skills. As a student of the environment, he continually expanded his awareness of proper land use, natural light, and site orientation, while incorporating regional material, color, and texture. In a summary of the firm's goals in 1983 Dean wrote "We intend to provide superior and resourceful architectural services which are creative and regional."
