Clara Louisa Gayer was born on September 9, 1879, the daughter of Jacob and Fredericka Gayer of Akron, Ohio. She had two siblings, Mary E. and Jacob J. Gayer. From December 1911-February 1912, she lived in Gatun in the Panama Canal Zone. Clara and her sister Mary lived together in Akron until at least 1940.
