Worsley Emes began his military service as a gunner in James Butler's company of the Royal Artillery Regiment of the British Army in October 1755, and served in North America until January 1769. In October 1776, Emes became first lieutenant of the Pennsylvania Artillery Regiment for the Continental Army. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
