John Peterkin journal 1817-1819, 1837-1838 Peterkin, John journal

The John Peterkin journal includes letters written by Peterkin, a Scottish immigrant to Virginia and Georgia in 1817-1819, to family and friends in Scotland and Pennsylvania, as well as writings by William Russell, a later owner of the journal. Peterkin wrote about his thoughts on slavery, the displacement of Native Americans, and democracy.

John Peterkin was born around 1790 in Forres, Moray, Scotland. In August 1817, he boarded a ship in Liverpool and sailed for Baltimore. He settled for a few months in Fredericksburg, Virginia, before moving to Augusta, Georgia, in July 1818. According to a note in his journal, written by William Russell, Peterkin died in 1833 in New Orleans.
