The Riley family papers document the family of Ashbel Wells Riley and his children George S., Ashbel, Jr., and Anna. Ashbel Riley (1795-1888) was born in Glastonbury, Connecticut. In 1816, he settled in Rochester, New York, and worked as a builder; he eventually became a prominent landholder and city government official. A native of Saratoga County, New York, Elisha Taylor came to Detroit in 1838 and lived here until his death in 1906. He was a graduate of Union College, New York, and was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1839. Taylor held a number of public offices, including Master in Chancery, 1842-1846; U.S. Pension Agent, 1854-1870; and U.S. Register of the Land Office, 1853-1857.
