Classes in physical education for women were first conducted in 1894. Barbour gymnasium for women was completed in 1898, in expectation of which Eliza M. Mosher, M.D., was named professor of hygiene and was put in charge of the Women's Gymnasium. The Women's Athletic Association was organized in 1905, and in 1908/09 a women's athletic field (Palmer Field) was purchased and equipped. Mabel E. Rugen was born May 13, 1902, in Glenview, Illinois. After receiving her B.S. in physical education from the University of Wisconsin in 1925, she worked as a physical education teacher in the Glenview Public Schools. She then went on to New York where she earned a M.A. (1929) and a Ph.D. (1931) from New York University in physical education.
