Seamus Deane (1940-), Irish poet and educator, was born in Derry, Northern Ireland. He attended Queen's University, Belfast and Cambridge University. He was a professor of English and American Literature at University College, Dublin and a professor of Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He was also a founding director of the Field Day Theatre Company, along with David Hammond, Seamus Heaney, and Tom Paulin.
