Walter B. Beals was born in St. Paul, MN in 1876. He moved to the Washington Territory with his family that same year. He graduated from the University of Washington's School of Law in 1901. After graduation, he went into private practice in Seattle, Wash. Mr. Beals served in the United States Army in World War I. Joel Edward Ferris (1874-1960) was first President of the Board of Directors for Friends of the Library of Washington State University, 1938-1948, and served on the Board until his death in 1960. Ferris was Chairman of the Spokane and Eastern Division of the Seattle-First National Bank, Spokane, President of the Eastern Washington Historical Society and had received an honorary degree of doctor of laws from Whitman College and Washington State University.
