Forrest Emmanuel La Violette received a graduate degree in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1936. He was a faculty member in the sociology department at the University of Washington from 1936 to 1940, where he conducted research on Japanese Americans. During World War II, he joined the staff at Heart Mountain Relocation Center, a Japanese American internment camp in Wyoming.
