Hallock was born in Utica, N.Y., and was trained as a cabinet maker, draftsman, surveyor, and civil engineer and was one of Portland's earliest contractors. The journal describes his experiences on the coast, daily tracnsactions and experiences during construction jobs. He fished, trapped, observed the weather, visited, and was visited.

Absolom Hallock (1826-1892) was a mechanic, draftsman, civil engineer and surveyor. From the guide to the Absolom Hallock papers, 1851-1892, (Oregon Historical Society Research Library) Hallock was born in Utica, N.Y., and was trained as a cabinet maker, draftsman, surveyor, and civil engineer.
