Mattie Avery graduated from Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) in 1892. The granddaughter of Corvallis pioneer, Joseph C. Avery, Mattie was born in Paisley, Oregon, in 1873 and apparently attended St. Mary's Academy in Portland before enrolling at OAC. Avery married John Fulton in 1897 and lived in Corvallis until her death in 1962 while visiting in California.
