Frank O'Neal (1921-1986) was an American cartoonist and creator of the newspaper comic strip Short Ribs . Born in Springfield, Missouri, O'Neal did not begin formal art training until after service in World War II, studying for three years with the cartoonist Jefferson Machamer.
