In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war." Minerva ("Minnie") Greenwood Curtis, a Providence, Rhode Island native, was a grade-school teacher from the late 19th century to mid-20th century. She was the daughter of John and Anne (Greenwood) Curtis, the sister of Dora E. Curtis (who married Ward Beecher Chase) and the aunt of Brig. Gen. William C. Chase. As Major in U.S. Cavalry attended Command & General Staff School (1931) and Army War College (1935).
