Palmer was commissioned Captain of Co. K, U.S. Volunteer Infantry in 1865 and commanded several posts in the West. In 1866 he was elected clerk of the District Court of Douglas Co. William Clarke Quantrill was born in Canal Dover, Ohio in 1837. He came to Kansas as a young man, and taught school for a while before he became active in the border wars, between free state and pro-slavery forces in the fight for Kansas statehood. He fought on the Confederate side during the Civil War, participating in guerrilla warfare.
