Josephine Few family papers 1868-1958

Josephine A. Few's grandfather, Dr. Samuel F. Few, emigrated from Virginia to Kansas Territory's town of Leavenworth in the early 1850s. These family papers contain several of his printed invitations to Leavenworth social events, a news clipping regarding the Few family farm near Leavenworth, and a letter from University of Kansas Professor E. H. S. Bailey regarding the water quality of the farm's mineral springs. Included are Josephine Few's descriptions of Dr. Few's ancestry and his life in Leavenworth.

Josephine A. Few was born at Leavenworth, Kansas in February 1884 to George W. and Mary Few. George Few was one of the area's early settlers. Josephine Few's grandfather, Dr. Samuel Few, arrived in Kansas Territory in the 1850s, and was among signatories to the original articles drawn up for Leavenworth's founding. Edgar Henry Summerfield Bailey was born in Middlefield, Connecticut in 1848. He studied chemistry at Yale and earned his doctorate degree at Illinois Wesleyan. Bailey was appointed to the chair of chemistry, mineralogy and metallurgy at the University of Kansas in 1883, where he served variously as head of the Chemistry Department until 1918, in full- and part-time professorships until his death in 1933.
