Ernst Lissauer was born in Berlin on December 10, 1882. His father, Hugo Lissauer (1843-1910) was a merchant in the silk trade and also became city counselor for Charlottenburg. The Friedlaender family settled in Oppeln about 1833 when Marcus Friedlaender purchased real estate there and established a distilling firm, which later grew to a large enterprise and remained in the family for 3 generations.
