John Robert Cluff was born November 24, 1883 in Provo, Utah to Henry Cluff and Keziah Russell Cluff. As a young boy, he spent winters in Provo, where he and his siblings attended school; summers were spent herding sheep and riding horses in Keetley, Utah, where the family owned a ranch. As a young man, he attended the Brigham Young Academy and Brigham Young University.
