Cluff, John Robert, 1883-1967

John Robert Cluff was born November 24, 1883 in Provo, Utah to Henry Cluff and Keziah Russell Cluff. As a young boy, he spent winters in Provo, where he and his siblings attended school; summers were spent herding sheep and riding horses in Keetley, Utah, where the family owned a ranch. As a young man, he attended the Brigham Young Academy and Brigham Young University. In 1903, the young John Robert Cluff was called to serve a mission to the Eastern States Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After nine months in New York City, New York, he was transferred to Boston, Massachusetts. Over the course of his mission, Elder Cluff worked in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Nova Scotia, Canada. Following his return from the Eastern States Mission in 1906 he and members of his family traveled to the Teton Basin in Idaho to visit family members. His parents subsequently returned to Provo, Utah, but John and his brother Charles remained in Idaho where they purchased a sawmill in Moose Creek. On the 22nd of May 1907 he met Rick's College student Myrtle Jones at a dance and reception. He and Myrtle were married ten months later on March 15, 1908. Over the course of the next fifty-nine years, he worked in a variety of jobs. In addition to operating a sawmill, he ranched, farmed, and mined. Following a heart attack in 1945 he and Myrtle sold their ranch and purchased a home in Victor, Idaho where they managed a trailer court. John Cluff died March 9, 1967. He was preceded in death by his wife Myrtle who died August 18, 1959. John Robert Cluff and Myrtle Jones Cluff were the parents of five children: John Verl Cluff, Veda Myrtle Cluff, Bernice Louise Cluff, Russell Henry Cluff, and Norma Marie Cluff.
