The Rand School of Social Science, a school for workers and socialists, was estalished in 1906 with funds from the will of Mrs. Carrie Rand under the leadership of George D. Herron. Theodore Schapiro (1898-1998), was a political activist and the last director of the Rand School of Social Science (1943-56). His early training in art and industrial design at Cooper Union, the Art Students' League, and the Beaux Arts Institute of Design led to a career in industrial design.
