Walter de la Mare was born on April 25, 1873, in the town of Charlton, in Kent, England. His parents were James Edward Delamare and Lucy Sophia Browning Delamare, of French and Scottish descent, respectively. He attended St. Paul's Cathedral Choir School in London.
